The definition of ethics in itself relates to the standard of morals that is set by a group of people, and the definition of communication is in itself the exchange of information between a group or between individuals. With these two definitions in mind, we can understand how ethics play into communication, more specifically we can understand the role of ethics within communication, and more specifically public speaking. It should also be made note of the fact that in a rhetorical sense, the word “ethics” applies to the credibility a speaker utilizes when speaking in front of an audience. Ethical communication in itself has many applicable uses regarding public speaking. For example, it is extremely important to understand the context of a speech, to be able to utilize ethos in its’ most effective form to engage the audience as much as possible. For example, if you’re presenting in front of a group of businessmen, it would be extremely imperative to utilize ethos, however, within in the context of a speech that may take place in front of comedy fans, it may be imperative to utilize other rhetorical devices such as pathos or logos. Personally, Ethical communication stands to make the speech more confident to the speaker and the audience. A speech that the speaker researches the subject they are speaking, will come off more confident and credible in their speech then a speaker who is not well versed within their speech’s subject material. Academically, it is very useful to develop strong ethos within your speeches as researching the subject material will constitute as learning and the speaker will become more educated both in general and will become more enlightened on their subject material. As for professionally, we can see how being confident in your speeches will both boost your confidence when speaking as well as boost your credibility in regards to the speech. A good speech that it is well articulated to the audience as well as structured in a professional manner can provide both social and employment benefits.
