I listened to the Nine Inch Nails album, "The Fragile" today. It was alright. A spam Instagram account just followed me and I am trying to get very. I have been depressed today and am concerned with my blood pressure, I will find a cardiologist on Monday. I am getting another white claw. Me and Dave hung out two days ago. It was very nice seeing him, he's a very good friend. I came up to the Dave Grave studio right after work so I was still in scrubs and what not. Me and Dave worked on Song For Ur Dog, which is a very good song and I am very proud of it. I played some bongos on it, and I'm very self conscious about my rhythm (I have a terrible sense of rhythm when it comes to playing percussion) but I was happy to play some bongos and for them to sound good. The song kind of has some N64 sound font elements that I am happy about. There is a part of that song where the song essentially stops - Dave played some beautiful Microphones-esque double tracked nylon string guitar. That part in the song essentially mirrors a brief moment of silence which I think is something I really want to capture - that sort of cinematic quality that someone like Bresson or Haneke would wax poetic about but within the format of music. Here is a pic of Dave looking crazy:
After we finished Song For Ur Dog, me and Dave moved onto another song in which my buddy Ryan played a sick guitar solo on it. We had a lot of fun, Ryan plays guitar for another band I play bass in (A Blue Shell Paradox), and he is very good at guitar. Ryan had a very good November Rain-esque solo lined out and he nailed it in like 3 takes. Me and Dave were amazed. After that, Ryan hung out for a little bit while I played the bass and Dave played organ (Me and Seth had already put laid down drums and electric guitar). Ryan left sometime around 7 PM. Me and Dave did some mixing, specifically we added some saturated effect to the vocals. After that, me and Dave called it a night. That song needs some mixing, specifically one of the vocals and the bass turned down but for the most part TJ is finished. I am coming up with ideas for the next thing, specifically thematic ideas and possible song things. I'm hoping to get some microphones for my birthday and get into recording things on my own again. I think that would allow me to get better with my rhythm and mess around with different samples and what not. I think it would minimize the bulk work (scratch tracks, etc.) and allow me and Dave to experiment with different sounds a lot more (sequencing, N64 sound fonts, etc.). Here is a picture of Dave and Ryan listening to organ sounds and watching my awesome skills at dragging the slider back in ProTools:
When I got home I did a little college work and then I went to bed. I had a dream that I was in Dave's kitchen and I was very sentimental and neurotic - which artistically is pretty regular for me. I was telling Dave about Cory McCulloh and Jamie Stewart from Xiu Xiu and I started crying because I tend to do that in my dreams. But I was telling Dave about how in the opening seconds of Xiu Xiu's acoustic version of Helsabot you can hear Cory and Jamie talking about the song and it's sort of meta and fourth wall breaking but what's important (atleast to me) is how audio recordings (songs) can almost clinically represent a friendship or something like that. I don't think I said all that in the dream, but that's my interpretation of Helsabot. There's that Neil Young quote about how the best part of a song is when someone coughs or someone's chair squeaks, that might be true but idk, it's certainly something to note.
Anyway, it was really good to see my two friends from opposite sides of the spectrum together, meaning that Ryan is like a metal guy and Dave is an artsy guy. It was like a crossover episode or something. But when people care for you, they'll do things like that for your art projects and because they think your a swell guy. I think that's very sweet of them, they're great guys and they made a killer track with me. I really needed that this week. The next step is for me, Dave, and Seth to get together and do some of the final mixes. I will text them soon, probably tomorrow to set something up.
